who are the Batwa?

The Batwa are believed to be the original inhabitants of the central African forests. They belong to a larger group of indigenous forest-dwelling people known as pygmies, known for their short stature and deep cultural and spiritual connection to the forest.

They originally lived in the thick rainforests of southwestern Uganda, particularly in the areas that are now Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Where to find the Batwa in Uganda

The Batwa known as the pygmies’ of the forest, are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park around Buhoma, Nkuringo, and Rushaga sectors.

They are also found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park near kisoro, close to the borders with Rwanda and DR Congo.

Echuya forest Reserve ( between Bwindi and Mgahinga) is better known as one of the most significant remaining strongholds for the Batwa people in Uganda.

The Batwa trial also includes visiting sacred sites, caves, traditional homes, and learning forest survival skills.

They also offer cultural walks and performances.
